After our post of why innovating yourself is important in the corporate world, there are few techniques you can use to keep innovating.

Here’s how you can try innovating …

  • Take up people-watching, see how people react to certain things, see how their body language changes when they are happy, disturbed or sad. Learn to be aware that people in your team can help you be better at improvisation, because you can draw upon your mutual understanding and a shared background of experiences.
  • Listen to conversations in a crowd, keep your senses open, you never know what leads to the next big idea. Movies which are built on great stories don’t come by at a drop of a hat; every story behind the movie has a story of its own.

Here, I would really like to give an example of one of the finest actors in India today, Mr. Nawazuddin. It is encouraging to see him build the status quo and take up roles that need an actor to break away from regular patterns. From a small role in Munnabhai MBBS to Lunch Box he has only showcased talent beyond extraordinary.

Innovation starts with You

Ultimately, innovation starts with you. Not censoring yourself is a key component of being innovative. Unfortunately, though, we are conditioned to certain aspects of our lives because we have stayed that way for many years; we avoid speaking our hearts, making points that could be unrelated, or whatever else we may fear being or doing in front of others. This is the most difficult speed breaker for most people when it comes to being Innovative.

Finding innovation in oneself

Creative skills are not genetic or built in your DNA. In fact, they can be developed and enhanced by only by you. Innovators can be created… they are made! To be an innovator today, you have to want to change what your think about yourself. You have to be open to take calculated risks. You have to show the courage to change.

Actcelerate was started with a thought of how we can leverage my experience of cinema and theatre to another world. It was only at a conversation over coffee with my wife, when we realised: why not think out of the box, why not make this bigger, why not look for the extraordinary. That is when we realised why not take this to the corporate world.

That is when we realised why not take this to the corporate world.

There is no such thing as becoming creative or innovative on the spot, out of the blue. Most people would be baffled if you ask them to do something on the spot – even actors. Innovation is not just being creative, actor or a corporate aspect, it starts with YOU.

innovate

Our new post is divided in two parts:
1) Why is innovating yourself in the corporate world important?
2) Doing little things that will help you to keep innovating.

What is innovation, exactly?

Over the past few years as an actor, one thing that got me hooked on to this field is ‘innovation’. After doing more than 100 ad films and 20 TV shows, every audition I give, one thing is necessary: ‘to stand out from the rest’. For example, while doing improvisation we have nothing planned. No structure. No story. No character. Nothing except an outline that we get from the audience at the beginning of the play. I was fascinated by what makes innovation work in cinema and theatre. What creates greatest level of creativity that we see in our movies? What allows a complex, story to emerge from nothing but a simple idea? What is the ‘magic formula’ that allows a fully formed, movie – with believable characters and plot?
Unveiling the secret behind innovation

I soon realized that the connections between following the principles of improvisational theatre and being able to adapt, can help create and improvise effectively in the work place. That is when I realized how well cinema and theatre can be a solution provider in new ways and reach peak levels of innovative thinking in the corporate world. As actors, we have to be open to new ideas, characters and stories; regardless of whether we know the output. Actors and other individuals who live in the world of cinema and theatre would tell you that this kind of mind-set is a part of their everyday work culture. So, what can we learn from the way actors and other theatre artists work that will help us be more innovative, too? Now it’s time to talk about you and how you can innovate yourself.

When it comes to learning how to be more innovative, there are a few key areas on which we can concentrate to innovate ourselves:

Innovators look for the extraordinary!

Innovators are interrogators. They look for that one unique thing. They are great observers. They link ideas that are not normally connected. Innovators consistently question, observe, network and experiment more than the others. In cinema, I have observed how Sir Amitabh Bachchan has always innovated himself from the angry young man in Deewar, to a romantic hero in Kabhi Kabhi to a childlike enthusiast in Pa; he moulds himself into the character which wouldn’t have been possible if didn’t experiment with innovation.

Innovators encourage curiosity to excel

Most of us have problems and at the same time opportunities sitting in front of us. But, how many of us actually find solutions to those problems and have the courage to grab the opportunity? Thinking and acting as an innovator can help you grab that opportunity, climb the ladder and showcase your strengths which you have been under playing.
Staying curious keeps your mind engaged and alive. It’s time to relive that young childish inquisitiveness about everything around you. While reading Mr. Piyush Pandey’s book called Pandemonium, I have realised one thing, he wouldn’t have been able to create the magic if he didn’t ask questions to the people who passed by in his life at every stage, be it a carpenter or a cobbler. He wouldn’t have built brands such as Pidilite or Asian Paints without innovative story telling.

Innovators break from the regular patterns

Most organizations work inside the box, it’s only in the last few years we have seen entrepreneurs who have the courage to live their dreams. They get inspired by stories, by people, by movies and much more… to seek inspiration you must engage yourself.  By engaging in some simple activities that are typical pursuits of actors and creative writers, you can start developing these qualities without any help from anyone else.
We will soon share part 2 of this post on ‘Doing little things that will help you to keep innovating’.

We will soon share part 2 of this post on ‘Doing little things that will help you to keep innovating’.

As an individual who hailed from a family of bankers and CAs, I started out as a hotel management trainee who exited the career within 6 months to fulfil my parents’ dream of becoming a CA. After a few years of working with leading consulting firms I realised there is a calling – a calling into the world of characters, drama and acting. So, I detoured once again – this time to modelling, and finally to theatre, movies and TV. Not only did my career choices surprise my family, but I was left with a moral challenge as well: Does my chosen profession of acting, make a valuable contribution to the world when compared with the other professions I left behind? I guess this challenge has stuck with me and many others like me.

Today, with my experience as an actor, I wonder why not take the fun, excitement and experience of screen, beyond the screen, to the corporate world? As a first step in the direction, here are 5 ways in which theatre and cinema helps corporates empower themselves to express, bond and grow.

  • Cinema & theatre is a refined expression of basic human emotions:

Some call it an instinct to empower, to project stories, to draw strengths from their favourite characters or to create meaning through narratives and metaphors. We see this instinct expressed freely in children when they act out real or imagined characters of cartoons on TV. Through our various exercises we tackle emotions in a creative and a human way. Cinema and theatre steers true and honest learning while promoting collaborative thinking and debate, giving an opportunity for individual expertise to flourish.

  • Cinema and theatre helps build skills to listen to different facets of a conversation and to understand colleagues in various situations at work.

When we watch a movie, we learn what happens when intense drama, conflicts or arguments between characters don’t get resolved, and what happens when they do. Some of our cinema and theatre-inspired exercises help us develop our ability to imagine outcomes of our choices in our personal and professional lives. For instance, our ‘Over Expression’ exercise helps one to be aware of the body language and their expression, which unintentionally, could be harming a colleague.

  • Cinema and theatre brings people from different societies together.

Corporate training using cinema and theatre is not about sitting through slides of presentations or doing things individually. Here, people come together through various exercises, witnessing and contemplating acts, plays and engagements that are beautiful, thought-provoking, humorous, moving and often empowering. In an age when most of our communication happens through technology, we believe that getting people together to emote and share their ideas brings about major changes in an individual and in an organization as a whole.

  • Cinema and theatre helps enhance attention, inspires out-of-the-box thinking and spontaneity.

Cinema provides a new standard for training that connects not only with the intellect but also the heart and body. The sheer enthusiasm, open-endedness and participatory nature of cinema and theatre unblocks creative energy and steers its spontaneous expression. The awareness and alertness created by this expression gets directly channeled to work. Moreover, it helps in greater flexibility, team cohesion, innovative responses and self-esteem.

  • Cinema and theatre encourages us to go beyond our linear thinking and to look at the bigger canvas of life.

It influences the way we think and feel about our lives. We experienced an intense example during a training session when a woman shared that one of our exercises made her realise that she pretended to be someone else when she was actually not that person. She felt suffocated to constantly play a role and was always chasing people’s expectations.  We don’t hear things like this every day!

But speaking more broadly, isn’t this one of the things we go to the movies for, to measure our own lives against the lives we see of the character in the movie, to imagine what it would be like if we lived those lives instead? And to think, maybe there’s something we should change about our lives? It may have nothing to do with the message that the character or the movie wanted to deliver! It’s something you saw in yourself.

So, these are my five ways to tell you how cinema and theatre in the corporate world matters: It helps to express freely, builds our skills, brings people together, enhances creativity and spontaneity and influences how we think and feel about our own lives.

There is cinematic angle in everyone’s life; on stage, in front of the camera and in our work  life. Actors and business leaders share similar goals: they present themselves confidently to their audience , they are persuasive communicators, and excellent negotiators. They think out of the box,   solve problems creatively and  lead others toward a common mission. At the end, they are truly the  superstars.

Today the corporate  draw lessons from cinema & theatre to enhance employee capability, enabling them  to become strong leaders and communicators,

Cinema in corporate world is not about creating actors, it is about unforgettable experiences while being able to explore oneself through fun, introspection and communication. It gives the the employees an opportunity to participate in various exercises that help them  realise their potential, be inspired, communicate, think out of the box, induce confidence, enhance team spirit, and finally have people skills, that  can be used in life and business growth. Cinematic strategies  is about enhancing how an employee approaches across range of business solutions.

Cinema and theatre role play is a powerful tool for development and change,  it allows those participating to observe themselves and understand  their   behaviour patterns, it also helps to get to the bottom of a challenge. Everyone has a side of them, which either they are not aware of, or they don’t use; but what cinematic tools in corporate does is gives an  opportunity to be aware of the side of our self that relates to the characters and the role we play..

Being imaginative brings out skills that are required today in business to excel and grow. Everyone wants to be ahead of the game, be different and authoritative, but very few people are willing to let go of the rigidness and tackle to bring out their creative sides. Cinema helps people be themselves. It brings out surprising skills, which can be applied to the business world, but it is not about learning to mask behaviours; it is about exploring emotions, responsiveness, self-assurance, projection and authenticity. Its about realising our own inner power!

To hell with facts! We need stories! ~Ken Kesey

The most common question I come across in my several corporate training seminars across India & Dubai, is about the relevance if using the Art of Storytelling in the corporate environment. Let me try and answer it:

Well, a great sales person should be able to ask great questions, listen actively, understand the environment and customer and tell great stories. Now while, there are many established techniques, inductions and programs to enhance the first three skills viz. asking, listening and comprehension, many do not optimise the power of selling via story telling. There is truckload of potential hiding there.

Stories have become increasingly important in the world of selling. They can be used as a influential tool for getting the attention of prospective customers. Great stories create memorable conversations, differentiate you and bring you closer to your goal of selling.

Disney is my favourite example of a company using storytelling in their marketing campaigns. They devise a story and then sell merchandise that come out of that story. With a Finding Nemo, they talk about the importance of courage and listening to your heart, in any and every situation. With a classic like The Lion King, it instils leadership values. Today these stories have become a part of our lives.

According to Paul Smith; the difference in business success is storytelling… great leaders do it well… and others keep enhancing the skill. Here are few pointers that help in creating a great platform for story-telling.

  • A memorable impact:Share your experiences that leave a memorable impact. Narrate stories that help you to connect to your audience. Whether is a presentation or a pitch, a great story can win many hearts.
  • Connecting to human emotion: Humans connect to anything that strikes a chord, your stories need to touch the heart.
  • Bring in cinematic twist: Use the right expressions and plots to narrate your stories. This will create a lasting impression on your presentation.
  • Include your people ‘Who is your hero’: Put your audience into the plot of the story. Make them curious about what is going to come next.

Actcelerate brings out the great art of story-telling and sparking emotional quotient through its corporate training programs. We use Cinema and Theatre to infuse laughter, acting and sharing through innovative techniques that make people more creative, productive, joyous and better leaders. We build an atmosphere where everyone wants to get on board and create and share excitement.

As a corporate, your goal is to surround your clients and consumers with great experiences, so they can decide how they want to create that chemistry with you. Give them multiple ways to enjoy your brand or corporate story, and you’ll find yourself moving closer to achieving your new business goals.

Ravi Ratanpal (Fund Manager, JP Morgan)

Last three months were full of fun and getting close to who I am as a person. I realised that it’s not about the technical aspects of communication but the non technical aspects like inhibitions and fears regarding public speaking which completely got dropped in these 3 months. Now when I go for a board meeting or meet friends, my confidence level is completely different. I’m in charge of my communication skills, express myself completely & I can talk anywhere, in front of anyone, openly, freely and spontaneously. My myths about positive & negative emotions got completely cleared and it has helped me personally and professionally. I learnt that ‘Emotions are just emotions, nothing else’. You just need to express them while being sensitive of the situation & people.

Geeta Singh(Professional Make-Up Artist)

Before coming for the workshop I was feeling numb about a few areas of my life. This workshop had helped me to know where that numbness we coming from, has helped me to express myself completely and to know what is going on & what do I need to do to get out of it. Its very big for me. I am feeling confident, expressive and clear.

Shrutika Nilakh(Partner at Architect Firm, WiseArt)

I walked in this workshop thinking how to enhance my communication, what is missing in my expressions. I did not know that expression is such an important part of being which I was always suppressing. In these 3 months, I went through ups n downs in my own expressions which helped me to express my various emotions at various levels and I realised that ‘Life is nothing without expression’. ‘I need to say what I need to say’. This workshop has helped me to get back to my basics. I see myself spontaneous, talking my heart out and go with the flow. I have realised how important it is to be sensitive towards situations and people while expressing.

Leena Naik (Talent Specialist & Interview Coach)

The effect of the workshop has been completely different on me as I am an overly expressive person. It has helped me to tone myself down and say things without putting drama to it. I can see that in a lot of critical situations I was able to communicate clearly without creating fassad about it. I’ve learnt ‘how to listen with sensitivity’. I realised that I need to work on my facial expressions. I feel spontaneous, free n easy while communicating. I am happy that I’m able to present myself not getting affected by what will people think about me.

Praneet Keni (Professional Fitness Trainer)

This 12 session course has given me the power to express myself in front of the people very openly, spontaneously and effectively. Not only this has helped me in my communication skills and brought in lots of confidence, this course has helped to open my inner self to explore my vision and build strength in my thoughts & convert it into my voice.

One of the biggest fear in life and work is Confusion. It just does not let the person to go ahead. This confusion makes you lost, irritated, angry etc… But take a moment out and think. Confusion is not always a bad thing. However, it is a natural and healthy part of the creative process. Confusion leads the mind to think better, judge both the sides and helps you make the final decision with more clarity. What is strange is when you start believing you are not good enough in this whole confusion. That’s when questions like, “Can I do it”? “Is this meant for me”, “Am I worth it?” but these thoughts do not nurture the creative thinking and will stop you from creating something new and wonderful.

Let’s ask ourselves today, “What is Confusion?” Confusion is the state of being confused or unclear in our mind about something. It is a state of not knowing. But we forget that every genius in this world has gone through a state of confusion. It comes with the territory of exploring new ideas, new thoughts and new beginnings. This is the beginning of our curiosity to build in. It is when we are open to explore and start conversations with people. It builds a system where the mind is open to hear, know and learn.

The creative process is not time bound. There is no short-cut to creativity and clarity. And there hasn’t been a creative process where the mind has not been confused.  Theatre and meditation plays a big role in defining the creative process through a confused mind. It helps our mind not to fight confusion. But accept it and evolve through it. It’s a stage you must pass through to create something new. Fighting confusion only makes it worse.

How to Apply Meditation and Theatre to ‘The Creative Process’

Get back your focus & clarity: Start doing something spontaneously which your mind is not prepared of such as singing, dancing, talking loudly to yourself or jumping & so on(Please avoid doing in front of others!). Spontaneity helps us to bring ourselves to the present moment and brings in clarity.

Getting ready for some meeting: a short form of breathing meditation, helps in boosting clearing our blocked thinking passages. Try meditating before your brainstorming and ideation sessions so that you are less distracted, fully focused and can produce higher quality initial rough ideas.

Quick Relaxing: Many people find it hard to go offline, relax, and stop obsessing over small things. Even a short meditation can calm your distracting thoughts, reduce anxiety or stress, and help you just be in silence. And, who knows your next big idea may even appear during meditation! The point is, don’t try to make more confusion out of the confusion. Just let it be!.  Relax and let the clarity come naturally! Relax by just sitting in your seat and taking a 10 min power nap, or just walking around your office without talking to anyone, listen to some soulful music.

Awareness: When we practice meditation, we are get clarity and can see our thoughts better—In other words, meditation and theatre activities help in increasing awareness. It makes your mind think differently. It gives a perspective to see small fragments in a bigger picture.

The Result:  It is not always important to stay focused, positive and motivated to think of the big idea. Even if the first attempt doesn’t get you the results you want, each time adds to the next.  The creative process is a window into our rational thinking. It is about how we apply it. If you just sit and accept the confusion, it will surely help you reach the CLARITY and DECISION MAKING.

THEATRE FOR EVERYONE

What is Theatre?

(Theatre is a collaborative form of fine art that uses live performers, typically actors, to present the experience of a real or imagined event before a live audience in a specific place, often a stage. The performers may communicate this experience to the audience through combinations of gesture, speech, song, music, and dance. Elements of art, such as painted scenery and lighting are used to enhance the physicality, presence and immediacy of the experience. )

This is the Dictionary definition of the word Theatre!

In everyday world, Theatre is nothing but REPRESENTATION OF LIFE!

What is the role of Theatre in our lives?

Now, take a close look at your life – Make your workplace, your home, places you go, modes of travel you use and things you see as your Theatre Stage. And make people you meet, interact as your co-actors and you are the lead actor of your life. We all are playing our parts, doing our roles in the best of our abilities. We share different emotions with each other, express ourselves or not express, pretend, hate, care, love, share, live and feel & so on. If we put a CCTV camera on us 24×7 then we also have an audience!!! J Who says we need to be professional actors to be a part of or learn ‘Theatre’? We all are great actors, scriptwriters & directors at all times in our real lives. The difference is now we shall do the same consciously.

Theatre, Acting, Improvisation, Meditation, Cinema, Drama, Music…..are all related to each other. They all are Sa-Re-Ga-Ma-Pa-Dha-Ni-Sa when joined together. We all are connected to them very deeply. You need not be an artist to be connected to them. You can be anyone professionally – Doctor, Engineer, CA, MBA, Photographer, Analyst, Student, Homemaker, Musician……Anyone. IF YOU HAVE FEELINGS, THEN IT’S FOR YOU!

Why should people who are non-actors by profession resort to Theatre?

We normally see Theatre as Play or Role Plays. That’s not complete. Theatre is Us, what we feel, what we express, what we say, what we don’t say, our relations, our mental & emotional process, our actions, our behavior….everything we see, feel and hear around us comes under the purview of Theatre. Everything!

These Experiential Workshops help participants:

  • To de-clutter themselves emotionally and mentally to feel relaxed, happy and light in their overall being;
  • To express themselves confidently and fearlessly in front of people;
  • To enhance their body language, expressions, voice pitch and modulation;
  • To enhance capability, efficiency and focus in every area of their lives;
  • To bring in innovation, ideation and creativity in their thoughts & action;
  • To bring in spontaneity & promptness in their actions;
  • To bring in awareness in and around themselves;
  • To synchronize mind, body and soul which eventually helps to create balance in different areas of their life;
  • To bring in Trust, Empathy and Self-confidence which helps in strengthing relations with themselves and others around them;
  • To bring in Unity and Togetherness within their relations;

Wouldn’t we all want all of this in our life? Theatre has a lot to offer to us whether we are professional actors of not. Theatre is Representation of Life and we all are a part of life. Hence, Theatre is for everyone.

There is Theatre & Drama taking place in and around us at all times. We just need to become aware that it is taking place and we are also playing various roles on this stage. The day we become aware of the drama inside and outside us, our way of perceiving situations & people will transform.
Theatre has been an influential factor in many people’s lives irrespective of their profession. With the help of Theatre & Arts, creativity can flourish, academics can improve, and means of self-expression can be developed. Participants benefit significantly, not only in terms of exploring the unexplored or hidden ability to act, but also by shedding the inhibitions associated with performing in front of an audience. Theater can be influential in all aspects of life. Participating in theater can stimulate participant’s creativity and thought process. The whole experience of theatre makes people more aware and sensitive towards various issues. It empowers the meek and makes people do away with their reservations.
Learning Theatre & Arts can really bring in a lot to life. Here are the few benefits participants experience during & after the workshops:

1. Get attuned to yourself
Theatre & various forms of Arts help you as an individual to synchronize your mind, body & soul. This synchronization helps you to get more aligned to yourself, your surroundings, people and situations. This alignment is very important to bring in harmony and trust at workplace and in life.

2. Innovative and Creative Skills
Theatre & Arts help you to break your linear thinking pattern and open new avenues when it comes to innovative solutions. This helps participants to become more spontaneous and prompt while being innovative. You learns to pop new ideas promptly when needed and tap into creative zone of your brain.

3. Communication Skills
Many participants find that theatre helps them develop the confidence that’s essential to speaking clearly, lucidly, and thoughtfully.

Acting onstage teaches you how to be comfortable speaking in front of large audiences, and some of your theatre sessions will give you additional experience talking to groups. Oral communication skills are so important to some employers that they often send management trainees to special workshops.

4. Emotional Intelligence
Theatre and other Art forms help to tap into the creative zone of your brain which eventually enhances Emotional Intelligence of the person. EI/EQ helps to raise the levels of empathy, collaboration, harmony, trust and care in the person. The most renowned global companies are looking for enhanced EQ while hiring an employee as this helps them to reach their consumers tapping into their EQ.

5. Creative Problem Solving Abilities
Most people expect theatre students to exhibit creativity in such areas as acting, design, playwrighting or directing, and many companies do recruit creative thinkers. But employers are not always aware that theatre experience also helps you learn creative problem-solving techniques that are applicable to many jobs. Tell them!
The point here is that your creative ability, what you’ve learned about using creative processes to solve problems, can be directly applicable to virtually any job you may have.

6. Empowerment
While we learn to let go off our fears, inhibitions, anxiety & stage fear, we enter the realm of Empowerment. This empowerment leads to confidence and courage in different areas of our life.

7. Increases Productivity & Effectiveness
Theatre and Arts helps in enhancing various life skills such as working in collaboration, bring in innovativeness, new ideas, trusting teams, owning each other, empowering oneself and so on. These life skills help in raising productivity and effectiveness of the participants & their involvement at the workplace.

8. Willingness to Work in Collaboration
Theatre demands that participants work together in collaboration for the production to success; there is no room for “we” versus “they” behavior; the “star” diva is a thing of the past. Your colleagues will usually let you know when you violate the team spirit of a production.

In theatre, it’s important that each individual supports the others involved. Employers will be pleased to know that you understand how to be a team player.

9. Enhances Ownership
Theatre helps you to bring ownership towards your team members and the Unit as a whole. You don’t have an option but to own. This quality of ownership helps the participant while working in an Organization too.

10. Leadership Skills
As a theatre student, you have many opportunities to assume leadership roles. You may, for example, assist a director or designer and lead other volunteers, serve as a crew chief, or even design or direct a production yourself. In the nuturing environment of theatre, faculty help you learn from mistakes so you become a better leader. Leadership training like this can open the possibility for comparable opportunities in a company that hires you. Can you think of any other major that offers this opportunity?

11. Self-Confidence
Theatre training teaches you confidence in yourself. Your accomplishments in theatre show you that you can handle a variety of jobs, pressures, difficulties and responsibilities. You develop a “Yes, I can!” attitude. Of course an employer will treasure that.
Theatre and art forms help in addressing fears and insecurities which are biggest obstacles to self confidence.

12. Enhance Voice, Body Language and Facial Expressions
You learn to enhance your voice pitch, body language and facial expressions. These skills are important while presenting or speaking publicly. Enhanced skills help in raising the confidence level of the person.

13. Enjoyment — “This is Fun!”
Theatre helps us to bring in range of emotions on a daily basis – Laughter, Celebration, Anger, Fear, Happiness, Jealousy, Love, Crying, Sadness, Joy and so on. This roller coaster with your theatre buddies is nothing less than you living your favourite movie character in real life.
It’s experiential, active and real. This is where you actually experience being in the present moment.

14. Time-budgeting Skills
When you’re a theatre participant, being involved in theatre forces you to learn how to budget your time. Time is very crucial at every stage and you needs to schedule your time very carefully as every thing happens on stage at a particular time & it cannot be changed. Good time management skills are enormously important to employers.

15. Promptness and Respect for Deadlines
Tardiness is never acceptable in theatre because it shows a lack of self-discipline, and more importantly, a lack of consideration for others. Being late for a rehearsal or a work call or failing to finish an assigned task on time damages a production and adversely affects the work of many other people. Theatre demands that you learn to arrive on time and meet scheduled deadlines.
That’s a job-skill. Employers appreciate workers who are on time and do their work as scheduled.

16. Aliveness, Awareness and Agility
In theatre you work within the structure of a set of procedures and rules that deal with everything from shop safety to behavior at auditions, rehearsals and work calls. You learn that you must be a “good follower.” Theatre teaches you the importance of rules, a concept that’s valued in any organization.
You don’t have an option but to drop that casual attitude and bring in more aliveness, awareness and agility.

17. Art of listening
We all know how and when to speak. Emphasis of great conversation lies in listening and not just speaking. If you don’t listen, you’re likely to make some major error that will damage the theatre production. Listening happens when one is absolutely tuned with him/herself.
Listening is a skill for any job and an employer will respect your ability to listen and comprehend.

18. Adaptability and Flexibility
Theatre students must be adaptable and flexible. You need to be willing to try new ideas, accept new challenges, and have the ability to adapt to constantly changing situations and conditions. In one production you may be a member of the prop crew; in the next perhaps you’re in charge of makeup, publicity or the box office; in a third production you might have a leading role.
A worker who is versatile and flexible is highly valued to most employers; both traits prove that you are able and willing to learn new things.

19. The Ability to Work Under Pressure
Theatre work often demands long hours. There’s pressure–often, as you know well, a lot of pressure. It’s important that everyone involved with a production be able to maintain a cooperative and enthusiastic attitude under pressure. The ability to remain poised under such tensions in an asset that will help you cope with stress in other parts of your life, including your job.

20. A Healthy Self-Image
To work in theatre, you must know who you are and how to project your individuality. But at the same time, it’s important to recognize the need to make yourself secondary to the importance of a production. This is a tricky balance that, although difficult to accomplish, is a valuable trait that employers treasure.

21. Self-Discipline
Theatre demands that you learn how to take charge of your life. More than other students, you are forced to make choices between keeping up with responsibilities and doing things you’d rather do. You learn to govern yourself. An employer will respect that ability.

22. A Goal-Oriented Approach to Work
Many aspects of theatre involve setting and achieving specific goals. In employer’s terms, you’ve learned to be task-oriented and capable of finding practical ways to achieve goals.

23. Focus & Dedication
As you work in theatre you learn to dedicate your very being–to doing your best to create a successful production. There is dedication to that show…to your home theatre…to theatre as an art. You alos need to be focused towards your play, script, character and not get bothered by whats happening in front of you or people around you.
Many theatre students discover that committing oneself to a given task is deeply rewarding. Employers respect workers who have learned the value of dedication.

24. A Willingness to Accept Responsibility
Theatre students sometimes have an opportunity that is seldom given to students in other disciplines–the chance to take on sole responsibility for a special project. Being a production stage manager…a designer…a crew chief…a director. Students with other majors seldom have anything even close to these lessons. You can expect employers to value this unusual ability.

Ask yourself again – How many roles do you play everyday and how well are you playing them?

With schools shutting for vacations, one thought that is passing by in most people’s head is "I can't wait for my vacation (soon). I need a break from the routine." I realised, this is how most people would describe work? Nothing more than the daily routine?

According to a recent Gallup study, just 13 per cent of the world's employees are happy and engaged at work. Rest are pushing their boundaries, self-complaining or just unhappy with many things around them. Sometimes personal unhappiness adds to the job stress.

Unhappy employees are always less productive. So, what does this mean for organizations? To maximize their results, organizations need to start considering their employees "happiness quotient." I call it the Positive Intelligence

After conducting over 100 workshops using Cinema, Theatre, Meditation and Improv I have realised that when people are given a chance to let go and release all the unwanted mind chattering it helps them to start thinking positively. People work with a positive mind-set, perform on nearly every level and their productivity, creativity, engagement improves at great heights. Employees, especially of the millennial generation, no longer view work merely as a means to pay their bills. People are searching for work that is interesting, meaningful and yes, makes them happy.

Yet happiness is perhaps the most misunderstood driver of performance. Most people believe that happiness follows success. “When I get a promotion and a good hike in my salary, I’ll be happy,” they think. “When I am going to find my perfect dream job, I’ll be happy” We forget this is illusion and the demands will never end.

But when you allow success to follow happiness, the positive mind-set will help you perform better and enjoy what you do everyday. One should work on the positive mind-set level across all parameters – Emotional & Mental.

Start by taking smaller steps. just 3 small steps!

1)      Choose activities that cultivate positive change in you

  • Keep a small diary to jot things you are grateful for.
  • Write a positive message to someone in your network.
  • Keep happy posters or pictures on your work table
  • Exercise for 10 minutes.
  • Listen to music atleast 10 min everyday

2)      Help your Co-Workers

A study conducted by Harvard Business found that social support was the greatest predictor of happiness during periods of high stress. View your team members as people, not employees. Care about their success and nurture their professional growth. If you are a mentor, don't be afraid to give both positive and constructive feedback. Help them to understand corporate politics, policies and procedures.

  1. Be genuine and authentic

It is no longer necessary for a senior personnel to be formal and reserved. People today respect leaders who are genuine and real. With role models like Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, it's okay to dress casually, it's okay to share personal information and it's certainly okay to make a mistake.

I am currently working with one of the industrial companies – manufacturing cement plants. I recently met with their management who are always working towards the happiness quotient. For over many decades the Management team has humbly developed a multimillion-dollar business ensuring that their employees are well takenc are off.. While he has had to update the technology in his business, the way he runs his business and treats his employees has not changed. They are now mentoring their next line of management but one thing remains common in their values - Be nice, treat people with respect and deliver on your promises.
